sir.

With reference to Your Excellency's letter No. 89/257 of the 18th May, I have the honour to confirm my tele- gram of the 26th July, which decoded was as follows:-

"Your letter May 18th 89/257 thirty bales gunnies and four bales cotton goods will be forwarded to Sydney for transhipment to Rabaul if your Government

agree. Letter follows".

2.

I enclose a copy of a report by the Attorney- General regarding the status of these goods. In view of this opinion I telegraphed as above, although Your Excellency made no reference to the four bales of cotton goods in your letter, and unless I hear to the contrary I propose to send them as well as the bales of gunnies.

His Excellency

I have, etc., (SD.) F. H. May,

Governor,&c..

The Right Honourable

Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson, G.C.M.G.,

Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia,
